A high-quality image contains a lot of information, especially if it’s a huge image and in a non-compressed format. While they’re gorgeous, some situations, like upload size limits, prevent people from using them. That’s where image compression tools come in.
Below are several ways you can reduce a JPG image’s file size. Some of these solutions don’t require extra software because Windows can already do it for you. We’ll also introduce a highly recommended online tool that will come in handy.
How to Reduce a JPG File Size
There are two main ways of reducing a JPG file’s size. You can either resize it or compress it. The former will make the picture smaller, while the latter retains the exact image size but with a loss in quality. Both have their place, so we’ll include instructions for each of them.
Compressing With TinyWow
TinyWow is a website full of extensive tools, such as merging PDFs, doing file conversions, and more. It has image compression functionality too, and you can compress any PNG file you upload in moments. Here’s how.
- Head to the TinyWow Image Compressor
- Browse and select or drag a PNG file onto the area.
- Press “Compress.”
- Press the “Download” button to download your compressed PNG file.
As TinyWow’s servers need space, the compressed image will only remain downloadable for 15 minutes at most after uploading. After that, you’ll have to repeat the process if you didn’t do the download in time.
Unlike some websites with limitations, TinyWow doesn’t have stipulations. You can use its tool as often as you want
For those worried about privacy, TinyWow doesn’t retain your data. Therefore, selling it to companies is impossible. All uploaded files are sent to TinyWow via hypertext transfer protocol secure (https), a secure method used by many popular websites today.
Resizing With Microsoft Paint
All Windows PCs come with Microsoft Paint, a simple yet capable image editor. With Paint, you can resize any image file quickly.
- Select any JPG image file on your PC you want to resize.
- Right-click on it and select “Edit.”
- Paint will open with your image, click on “Image” option beside “Clipboard” option.
- Select the “Resize” option.
- Choose between “Percentage” or “Pixels.”
- Check “Maintain Aspect Ratio.”
- Enter either a new horizontal or vertical value.
- Click on “OK.”
- Look for “File” and select “Save As.”
Whether you choose to resize by percentage or pixels, the aspect ratio will be kept unless you uncheck the option. This will reduce the image size, also bringing the file size down. There’s no compression involved in this process.
Using ZIP Files
Some large image files go beyond the allowed limit when sending it to someone via email. Google Drive is an option, but downloading a large file takes time. Placing the PNG file inside a ZIP file is an excellent alternative for these situations.
- On your PC, select any PNG file.
- Right-click on the selected picture and look for “Send To.”
- Click on “Compressed (Zipped) Folder.”
- Name the ZIP file and send it to someone.
Compressed files are much smaller and tend to fit the email size. Even if they don’t, uploading them to Google Drive is still possible, and the download times are much quicker thanks to the compression.
Checking File Sizes
After trying any of the steps above, you can see if the file size is reduced enough. If not, you can compress it further or use another method.
- Hover your cursor in any PNG file.
- Right-click and go to “Properties.”
- In the “General” tab, you can find the “Size.”
Not Too Big
You can use various tools to reduce the file size of your favorite PNG images quickly. Doing so allows you to share them with others without worry since not everyone has access to an internet connection powerful enough to download a large image. Consider using TinyWow for image compression and other purposes as well.
