A timer helps keep track of the elapsed time between two events. You could also use it to measure a specific amount of time and get an alert when the time is up. Timers are not only available on smartphones. You could set timers on Windows too.

How To Set a Timer on a Windows 11, 10, and 7 PC

If you are looking for how to set a timer on your Windows PC and aren’t sure how to do it, read on to learn a couple of easy methods you can use on different Windows versions.

How to Set a Timer on a Windows 11 PC

The steps to set a timer on a Windows 11 are slightly different from Windows 10 because it uses an updated version of the Clock app.

  1. Type “clock” in the Windows Search feature.
  2. Press Enter.
  3. Select the timer tab from the left menu.
  4. Click on the plus icon in the bottom right corner to add a new timer.
  5. You can see the new window displayed at the center of the screen.
  6. Set the time by typing into the timer box directly.
  7. Type the name underneath the box if you want to label the timer.
  8. When done, click Save.
  9. To start the timer, go to the timer and click on the “Start” button beneath.

You can reset the timer anytime by clicking on the “Reset” button next to “Start.”

How to Set a Timer on a Windows 10 PC

Setting a timer on a Windows PC is straightforward. You do not need to download any software because Windows has an in-built timer. Here are the steps to set the timer:

  1. Tap the Start menu at the bottom left of the desktop screen.
  2. Click on “Alarms and Clock.”
  3. Select the “Timer.”
  4. Click on “Add New Timer” at the bottom right of the screen.
  5. Choose from the timing options (hours, minutes, or seconds).
  6. (optional) Add a timer name underneath the clock.
  7. Select “Save” to effect the changes.
  8. To start the timer, click on the “Start” button.

The timer will go off immediately, and its name will be displayed alongside the time if you set it up earlier.

When you set a timer on Windows, they still go off even if your computer is locked. You could set as many timers as you want, and they could start counting down simultaneously.

How to Remove a Timer From a Windows PC

The Windows operating system does not remove your timers automatically from the Timer tool. Instead, it saves them just in case you need them in the future. However, having multiple timers that aren’t counting could look messy to most people. So, here’s how to remove a timer you no longer need from Windows.

  1. Click the Windows menu button.
  2. Go to “Alarms & Clock.”
  3. Click the “pencil” icon near the “Add new timer” button.
  4. Press the “trash can” icon on one or more timers you want to delete.
  5. Select “Done” to save your configuration.

The timer will be removed whether it’s active or not.

How to Set a Timer on a Windows 7 PC

Although Windows 7 doesn’t enjoy much support from Microsoft these days, and it’s also a dated OS in terms of resource management, some users still have it. You can set a timer quickly on a Windows 7 desktop or laptop, and some steps are unsurprisingly the same as in Windows 11.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Tap on the Windows icon on the bottom left of the taskbar.
  2. Place your cursor on “Search Programs and Files.”
  3. Type “Task Scheduler” into the box, and a page will display with options.
  4. Click on “Create Basic Task” from the options shown.
  5. The timer is displayed at the top of the timer box. Set the time by typing into the timer box directly.
  6. Type a name underneath the box if you want to label the timer.
  7. When done, click “Save.”

The timer will go off with an alarm, and a notification will be displayed on your screen. To ensure you don’t miss your timer, check the volume on your PC.

Improving Your Time Management Is Easy With Windows

Timers could help you measure your time on a specific activity and help you with your task management. The Windows OS makes this easy for users with its built-in timer.

Regardless of what Windows version you’re using, you should now have an easier time setting a timer and deleting the ones you no longer plan to use to declutter the “Alarms & Clock” window.

Have you ever set a timer on a Windows PC? Which of the Windows version did you use? Let us know by comments below.
