So, you’ve been using Cloudflare for a while and you’ve had a good experience. You’re happy with all they have to offer and your website hasn’t had any issues. But now you want to upgrade your website by adding subdomains. Cloudflare isn’t a web hosting company, so what do you do?
Can I add subdomains with Cloudflare, and if so, how do I do it? If you’ve asked yourself these questions, then this article is for you. Here we’ll explain how to add a subdomain in Cloudflare on a PC, an iPhone, and on an Android device. Fortunately, adding a subdomain is a straightforward process. Read on to learn more.
How to Add a Subdomain in Cloudflare on a PC
Adding a subdomain in Cloudflare isn’t done the same way it’s done with a traditional web hosting company. Instead of adding an A record, as you’d normally do, with Cloudflare, you’ll need to add the CNAME record that points to your registered domain. To learn how to add a subdomain in Cloudflare on a PC, follow the steps below.
- Go to your Cloudflare dashboard.
- Go to domain and click on subdomain.
- From the top menu, select “DNS.”
- Under the DNS records, click on the “Add Records” button.
- From the far-left window, for “Type,” select “CNAME” from the drop-down menu.
- Next, type in the subdomain name in the window labeled “Name.”
- In the window labeled “Target,” type in your registered domain name.
- Click “Save.”
You’ve now added a subdomain in Cloudflare. Edits in Cloudflare update quickly, and your new subdomain should be available within a couple of minutes. You can then perform a test to see if it’s working properly. Check our FAQ for how to run a simple proxy test.

FAQ
How can I test to ensure I’ve set up my subdomain correctly?
An easy way to test if your new subdomain is proxying your traffic is to set up a firewall rule and check to see if the firewall is working. You can create a new Cloudflare firewall rule that blocks your new subdomain. For the Hostname, use the exact address for the new subdomain and block all visits. Save this firewall rule and use an internet browser to visit your subdomain. If it’s working correctly, you’ll get an error message when trying to visit the subdomain. After testing, be sure to remove the new firewall rule. If you don’t, all visits to your new subdomain will be blocked.
How do I redirect a subdomain to the root domain?
If you are looking to redirect traffic from a subdomain to the root domain, you’ll need to create a proxied DNS A record for the subdomain. The A record can point to any IP address because all traffic is already redirected before reaching the address.
You could also use bulk redirects. You’ll need to use subpath matching and preserve match suffix to ensure that the traffic is directed properly.
Are my subdomains protected with an SSL Certificate?
As long as your root domain is using Cloudflare’s Universal SSL Certificate, the answer is yes. The certificate covers all first-level subdomains. For deeper-level subdomains, you can purchase the Cloudflare Advanced Certificate Manager, which covers more than one level of a subdomain.
Can I customize my Cloudflare subdomain behavior?
Yes. If you are a Cloudflare Enterprise customer, you can set up custom settings and access for specific subdomains with Cloudflare’s Subdomain Support. All other customers should set up domain-specific page rules. Details can be found here. If you want a subdomain’s settings to be managed by someone without access to Cloudflare, you can find detailed information here.
You Don’t Need to Add Subdomains From Your Web Host, Do It in Cloudflare
By simply adding the CNAME record that points to your registered domain, you can add a subdomain directly from Cloudflare. With this straightforward method, there’s no need to do anything with your web hosting company. Your subdomains are also protected with an SSL Certificate, giving you security and peace of mind that your website is safe from threats.
